The Pro Consul is by far one of the most difficult offices to hold in the fraternity. This is because this role is all inclusive. The Pro Consul has many jobs, not only his own. The Pro Consul must be the Consul if the Consul is absent or is incapable of performing his duties. He must be the Magister, knowing the full pledge program and making sure the chapter is not involved in hazing. He must be the Annotator, making sure every brother attends meetings/events. He must also be the Centurion, House Manager, Recruitment Chair, Quaestor, Etc. This is because to be an effective Pro Consul, he must be in touch with every aspect of the fraternity, from the lowest level chairman to the Consul. Although this might be my view, headquarters came up with their own standards as follows:The roles of a Pro-Consul as stated by the Sigma Chi Fraternity:1. Assist the Consul in ensuring that the chapter affairs and operations are conducted thoroughly and efficiently, that all chapter activities are carried our in the best manner possible, and that all members and pledges conduct themselves always in the best interest of the Fraternity and the chapter.2. Launch and administer the yearly Strategic Planning Process within the chapter.3. Develop and run a bi-annual Executive Committee Retreat for the purpose of team-building, officer/chairman transition and effectively guiding the chapter towards its vision.4. Preside over and administer the affairs of the Chapter Executive Committee.5. Praise in public and criticize in private.6. Direct and coordinate the work of all chapter committees and serve as a liaison between them, the chapter and the Executive Committee.7. Recognize, develop, and engage leaders within the chapter.8. Direct and coordinate Post Initiation Training (PIT) for each group of new initiates.9. Hold himself and every member of the Fraternity accountable to the Sigma Chi Oath of Initiation by presiding over the Judicial Board.10. Attend Balfour Leadership Training Workshop.11. Assume the full responsibilities of the Consul's position in the Consul's absence or incapacity.

There are many things that can help while running the office of Pro Consul. The main theme of your office should be that of: Be Proactive, not Reactive. This helps take care of problems before they arise. There are many things that can be done to achieve this, which only a few will be named here.

1. Run most of the chapter business through the Executive Committee.
Don't take away the chapters right to vote at meeting about a pressing issue, however, make it to where the Executive Committee votes during their EC, then have the chapter vote 80% or majority to overturn, not concur, their decision. This ensures that the leadership has their chance to lead. Also make your officers do reports and turn a copy in to the Pro Consul before EC. This ensures that the business is to the point recorded. If their business is not on the report, they will not be able to explain it until it is. Running the chapter business through EC will also make chapter meetings more of a ritual based meeting.

2. Keep a good report with your officers/chairman.
Keep in touch weekly, daily is possible. Learn your leadership style, and run with that. The most preferred is participative due to the fact that it is more of a teamwork task. Make sure to realize that not everyone likes to be led the same way. One brother may need your attention everyday whereas another brother may not. It would be wise to figure this out at the beginning of the year; the easiest way would be to simply ask.
