2007-08 Chapter Strategic Plan

Strategic Plan
Eta Alpha Chapter of Sigma Chi
The Eta Alpha Chapter of Sigma Chi had a number of goals before the start of the Fall 2007 semester. Among them, our number one goal was to increase member numbers by attracting more potential brothers-to-be during recruitment week at Eastern Kentucky University. EKU had come up with a new Rush process, so to add to our goal, we had to accomplish our mission within the constraints of a twenty minute period with each of the rushees.

Our Vision: To develop a plan to convince rushees that Sigma Chi is a Fraternity based on the values of the Three Great Aims and the standards laid forth by founder Isaac M. Jordan, and demonstrate the superior strength and advantages of a chapter strong in brotherhood, campus involvement, leadership, and intelligent time management skills.

The first two days of Fraternity recruitment involves an estimated three hundred students visiting each of the twelve Fraternities on the EKU campus. All students are split into groups and visit six of the Fraternities on one night and the other six on the next night. By seeing every Fraternity EKU has to offer, rushees get a better idea of which Fraternity best suits their personality. Our goal was not to convince every rushee that they should join Sigma Chi, instead we wanted our presentation to attract the caliber of young men who would be interested in being a part of a Fraternity based on Leadership.

Step one in the process of developing a strong Rush plan depended on the implementation of the Mission 365 program. Facilitator, Kenny Moyer, arrived at EKU two days before our scheduled recruitment week. For the next two days, our chapter learned useful strategies for connecting with rushees in a short period of time. The best and most beneficial lessons we learned came from the practice situations that Kenny Moyer put us in. He assigned a number of brothers to play the parts of potential new members and the rest of the chapter had to find out as much information about the rushee as possible. Further, the practice allowed us to be prepared to answer questions that potential new members might not even realize they are concerned about. These lessons allowed our chapter to come into recruitment with confidence in our interpersonal communication skills, which led to better distribution of information to rushees.

Step two in this process was to develop a time outline that would allow us to make the most of the twenty minutes we have with each rush group. We broke down the twenty minutes into sections that permitted us to meet two requirements: One, give an accurate impression of the worth of Sigma Chi to the young men coming through rush; and two, find out as much information as we can about each individual that comes to our Rush event. We wanted to make sure that everyone who saw Sigma Chi on those first two days knew that we stood out from the rest of the fraternities. Every minute of the time we had with the rushees was planned and scripted. The introduction was a five to seven minute presentation made by the Consul, Magister, Social Chair, and Rush Chair. The topics covered in the introduction were pledge obligations, social opportunities, academic expectations, and a brief description what the Eta Alpha chapter of Sigma Chi strives to be and accomplish. The only block of time that brothers could speak unscripted was after the introduction, at which time all of the brothers approach the rushees and begin conversing. Of course in a way even those discussions were planned out, based on the practice from Mission 365. By having a more organized rush than virtually every other fraternity on campus, we ensured we would attract the type of men we wanted as members in Sigma Chi. With better communication skills and a time structured rush event, we ensured that the Eta Alpha chapter would have no trouble giving an accurate impression of leadership and brotherhood.

Finally, we wanted to provide each rushee with tangible information that they could take with them to learn more about Sigma Chi. Since we were constrained to only twenty minutes with each rushee, it was crucial that they have something to take with them that would increase their exposure to Sigma Chi. Our faculty advisor, Dr. Judy Spain, provided us with close to four hundred individual folders that contained the rush times, a copy of the Jordan Standard, an application for our Dr. Judy Spain Leadership Scholarship, general information about the Fraternity, and some contact information. Each rushee was given his own folder to take back to and read in his own time.

The result of our planning led to one of the highest return rates of any other chapter at EKU. By the last night of recruitment we had over twenty young men who showed potential and who desired an invitation into Sigma Chi. This is a drastic improvement from our past three years of recruitment efforts where we have not had more than a dozen young men in each class interested in becoming Sigma Chi.

To ensure that this successful recruitment is the beginning of a tradition, the Eta Alpha chapter is scheduling a mini Mission 365 training workshop on the weekend before every Recruitment week. The materials left to us by Kenny Moyer allow us to pass on the training to every new group of Newly Initiated Brothers, and make certain that Eta Alpha is at the top of every Greek recruitment class to come through EKU.
